Broome Tree Art Deco Koa Tenor

$2,250.00

This is the most recent Art Deco design tenor ukulele to come out of the Pohaku workshop. Art deco is a decorative style well suited to many musical instruments and this instrument is one of the best that I have built. Each instrument gets tweaked a little more than the last and this continual perfecting of design coupled with some amazing koa has resulted in this fine instrument. I only build a few of these super fancy art-deco instruments a year.

Sometimes sound quality is sacrificed with the use of super curly wood and quite happily this instrument sounds as good as it looks. Its high tones ring strongly and has good low - mid range warmth. Overall it has an evenly strong EQ and good sustain. And it’s new now, koa generally takes a while to break in and while this instrument is sounding very good now it should grow into something even more outstanding.

And outstanding is the wood! This is pretty much as gorgeous as koa gets. My Hawaiian wood supplier tells me that the tree is from Oahu which he felled in the Roundtop district which is up behind Honolulu. Some of the other woods used in the construction of this instrument are well quarter-sawn Honduran Mahogany for the neck, Ebony for the fingerboard and the decorative elements are Birds Eye Maple, Curly Maple, Pearwood and Mahogany.

The neck is joined at the 13th and excellent quality fretting is done with the smallest finest size fretwork. The neck is full width with the nut just under 1 1/2” and the neck shape a perfect smooth ‘C’ shape, medium thickness. Tuning is via smooth turning Gotoh brand tuners. The nut and saddle are bone and the strings terminate at the body to an elegant ebony & koa pin-less style bridge.

The backside is arched on both axis as all Pohaku instruments are giving the back a bowl type shape. The finish is a silky smooth hand buffed glossy lacquer.

The fretwork and set up of this instrument are excellent. String height is nice and low with .016” over the 1st fret” and .100” over the 12th fret. Fret dressing is expert, relief in the neck is about .005”. Intonation is accurate and the ukulele is easy and pleasant to play.

The instrument will come in a hard-shell case. Overall length is about 26” long and weight is approx. 23 ozs.

Price is $2250. Shipping via Fed Ex ground in a sturdy reusable shipping box is $60.
