Six Olive Walnut
Title: “Six Olive Walnut”
Type: Tenor six string
Price: $2000
New Tenor size Pohaku Six String Ukulele. The tuning pattern is; high g / C-c / E / Aa. The C’s and the A are octave pairs. When I built in Hawai twenty years ago these six string ukuleles along with the 8 string variants were quite common but I haven’t built one in years. Playing the unusual Low A with the high ‘a’ octave string is a different experience from ‘normal’ Ukuleles. It’s quite pleasing but like switching to a low G instrument its playing needs to be approached differently.
That said, this six string tenor is super sweet sounding. It has more than ample volume a full big balanced EQ and long living sustain. The woods making this instrument are a curly Claro Walnut body and neck with a glossy finish, coupled to a Honduran Mahogany soundboard with a gloss olive tinted lacquer finish. The smooth fast neck is capped with a super tight grained black African Ebony fingerboard, 15 frets overall and green and brass fret markers. The tenor scale length is 17” and the width at the nut is 1 7/16”. For precise tuning there is set of six Gotoh SD-90 tuning machines with a fine 15:1 ratio. It’s more top heavy than a four string instrument with the extra tuners. The nut and saddle are bone inserts.
As always the back on this and all Pohaku ukuleles are arched helping with the tone projection, the integrity of the body and its more comfortable to hold than a new born baby.
And as usual attention to detail and the fit and finish of every aspect of the instrument is second to none. The playability is easy with a quality set up. The strings are about .100” off the 12th fret and approx .016” over the first fret.
The instrument will come in a quality hard case and will come in a safe and sturdy re-useable shipping box for you to send that old ukulele away in.
The overall length is approximately 26 1/2” and weight just under 28 ozs.
